Mudhoney’s fifth studio album marked the end of their major label career (they’d moved from Sub Pop to Reprise six years earlier). But they sound far from defeated; in fact, it’s one of their most hard-charging albums. Adding extra doses of blues to their usual aggro garage rock style, they whip songs like “I Have To Laugh,” “Poisoned Water,” and “Try To Be Kind” straight at the listener’s face, while moodier tracks like “Real Low Vibe,” “Oblivion,” and the crushing “Move With The Wind” get heavy in a Stooges/early Alice Cooper fashion, and some carefully placed organ stabs give “Night Of The Hunted” an extra jolt of energy.
