Tomorrow Is Another Day
Ulrich Schnauss’ second album with dream pop outfit Engineers band mate Mark Peters is another collection of glittering dreamwave and sweeping, swooning indielectronica, with hints of new age (Schnauss spent time in Tangerine Dream) in its always hopeful melodies and moods. The pair serve up carefully programmed synth beds constructed from a massed array of digital chimes, wavetable bells, analogue pads and FM keys, with simple smooth guitar parts meshed in, all circling round in smooth chord progressions, lazily reaching peaks before subsiding and rising again. Despite its abstract synthesised parts, the title track is almost poppy in its accessibility and throughout there’s an almost childlike sensibility to many of the melodies, a lullaby quality to the overall feel. Despite occasional more angular moments - Walking With My Eyes Closed recalls the icy 80s synthpop of Visage or Ultravox, Tomorrow… is mostly pretty, hypnotic and opulent electronics, ice cream sweet and candy floss light.
