Soundgarden’s debut full-length album, coming after two EPs, leaned often into the psychedelic, Led Zeppelin-esque aspects of their sound; opening track “Flower” had sitar-like guitar drones and a thunderous, arena-ready riff, and “Mood For Trouble” opens with fiercely strummed acoustic guitars before drummer Matt Cameron’s frantic beat kicks in. There’s a punk energy to several songs, too, most notably “All Your Lies” and “Circle Of Power” (and “Nazi Driver” could almost be a Mudhoney cover), while their version of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” has an almost dub-metal feel. From the beginning, they represented a new approach to heavy rock, honoring tradition even as they insisted on tinkering with the formula and proving that you could get arty and smash the listener’s head on the stage at the same time.
