The third album in the Tennessee funky soul-jazz instrumental band Magic In Three’s incredibly productive 2016 took a slightly different direction to their other work by employing a selection of vocalists to turn their distinctive smoked-out, psychedelic funk sound into songs rather than instrumentals.
It’s a successful project; the band have already proved that they’ve enough quality chops and musical ingenuity to craft full albums of highly listenable instrumental soul and funk, and the result of employing rappers like Turjazz and Rashad Tha Poet and vocalists like DeRobert and Du’Juan Mandell is a rich hybrid, part soul, part hip-hop, part funk, all with that slightly tripped-out flavour that Magic In Threes bring to their ensemble soul-funk sound.
