Steve Roach’s continuous electronic journey had a strong 2022 example with What Remains, at once a ‘typical’ collection of his keyboard and synth explorations into meditative and propulsive space and a stirring high level example of how his best work becomes sui generis. Beginning with the enveloping pulse and serenity of “Currents of Compassion,” the four pieces that make up What Remains stylistically range from the colder ambient float of “Prometheus Passage” to the murmuring echo and sense of deep living presence evident throughout “The Gone Place.”
