Slipper are a deeply peculiar proposition. Revolving around Sam Dodson who had made his name with the headiest early 90s intercontinental sample plundering super spiritual hippie-rave of Loop Guru, it evolved into a very different sort of sampledelia - still predicated on the pleasure principle, but much more decadent, eerie and urbane. It vaguely fit into the trip hop mould, but there was something Weimar cabaret about it all, something that made you feel like you slipped into a very bohemian novelette and were surrounded by shadowy people. Indeed plenty of fringe music folk were involved: Jym Darling, Neil Sparkes (Temple of Sound), Daniel Lazerus, Linda Finger, Liz Fletcher, John Woodley, and no less than Rat Scabies of The Damned. The 2000 Invisible Movies album for The Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Label is wonderful in a muted, slightly Tom Waits-y way, but this one is where they really expanded into those strange out-of-time mystery night-spots of the mind.
