Created in 2009 by Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Simon Purnell as a sub-label of Murphy’s Claremont 56 label, UK Balearic label Leng has amassed an idiosyncratic and highly rated catalogue, championing, as is the way with Balearic music, a sound slippery to define yet also totally identifiable.

Generally churning away at the mid-tempo-to-chug end of the house/disco spectrum, the Leng sound is the coalescence of a broad shared set of influences, the weaving together of strands from several musical traditions into something that sounds both familiar and new. Like Claremont, Leng releases tend to be influenced by various shades of disco — Italo, space, dub, cosmic, post etc. — along with boogie, krautrock, West Coast rock, jazz funk and psychedelia.  But while Claremont’s output was often introspective and laid back, Leng has always been focused directly on the dancefloor and the label’s debut 12” release, Ray Mang’s remixes of Mudd’s 54b, was the start of a triumphant stream of full, rich, sumptuous, glittering, glistening and expansive dancefloor single releases.

Since 2009, Leng have put out over a hundred releases including twelve albums, establishing themselves as a buy-on-sight label for many DJs in the process, and creating a catalogue weighty with high-quality, long-lasting contemporary dance music; Leng is Balearic disco reborn for the 21st century.
