j-pop

J-pop is an umbrella term for Japanese popular music, spanning a range of pop styles rather than a single sound or a strict recording period. The name emerged around the launch of Tokyo radio station J-Wave in 1988. Its later adoption does not mark the beginning of Japanese pop: the term can also be applied retrospectively to earlier recordings.
