This compilation gathers singles from Skinny Puppy’s albums Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse, Cleanse Fold and Manipulate, and VIVIsectVI, as well as the four tracks from the Chainsaw EP. By stretching many of the tracks out and letting the grooves run at length, they may not achieve “catchiness” in any conventional sense, but they are at least suitable for play in clubs. The “R:23 Remix” of the early track “Assimilate” sounds like an aggro reworking of the theme music to Doctor Who, while the last track, “Testure,” actually placed on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, and that’s understandable; the pounding machine beat and atmospheric synths are perfect for any DJ’s Goth night set, but it’s got enough deep funk bass to lure in New Order fans. This might be a better entry point for the Skinny Puppy-curious than any of their albums, with the possible exception of the slightly more rock-oriented Rabies.
