Bunzu Soundz

Released

Bunzu Soundz spent much of the early 1970s gigging in Napoleon — one of Accra’s coolest clubs, owned and run by legendary Lebanese-Ghanaian producer Faisal Helwani — setting crowds alight with their fiery mix of Ga rhythms and highlife. But in 1976 they traveled (together with their sister band Basa Basa) to record their album at the Afrodisia studios in Lagos, where post-war discontent, a rediscovered appreciation for African traditions, and the influence of American music had alchemised into a harder, psychedelic rock sound. With Helwani’s production, Bunzu Soundz self titled album is a trippy, funky, highlife masterpiece: just listen to the rolling percussion, cool funk bassline, and free-wheeling guitar playing on “Zinabu,” or the playful, folksy flute on “Disturbance,” and the insistent, repetitive rhythmic patterns and raw vocals on “Bokonor.”
