Two electric guitars recorded at very low volume in a Japanese Risograph studio. Bits of piano and field recordings of the streets during the New York City marathon, letting the light leak in. A slow and quiet drum beat. A digital sound treatment. The action here is in how the instruments push each other, and then lean into and away from pauses. The figurative field is widened by their dialogue and a precise sense of tone. Both Grubbs and Unami choose a rich but contained midrange, and everybody stays away from the extremes. Finger swipes and string squeaks get as much room as pitches, and the whole lot rolls on. Even the piano sounds like a guitar.
