Ultimately, “DJ culture” encompasses all of music, not just beat-matched dance-floor stuff. Far from it — at this point, it’s becoming more and more apparent that DJing is, in fact, a primary and crucial way for people to perform music for one another, equivalent in some senses (but not others) to real-time instrumental performance. With that out of the way: Not Waving is the monthly program of the Italian noise musician and DJ Alessio Natalizia — not every episode is themed, but those are the ones I go for. (See also his SST Records Special, from May 2019.) I don’t know if this is definitive, but one person I played it for had a madeleine moment over the Q and Not U track, so I’ll take that as a good sign.
