Free-D (Original Soundtrack)

After the release of their Fluidtrance Centauri EP, it was easy enough to pigeonhole Czech group The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa as second-wave shoegazers. Their subsequent album, Free-D (Original Soundtrack), blew that all apart. Expansive and wide-eyed, its ambient drift settled closer to post-rock groups like Bark Psychosis, though the cautious, spacious repetitions of songs like “Her Eyes Have It” and “Vacuum Blow” echo the shimmering ambience of The Irresistible Force, and “Surfing On Steam” is a pastoral techno mantra, as though Ummagumma-era Pink Floyd landed at acid house club Shoom.
