Garage Hour (Rinse FM, November 2019)

“An hour of garage — never again, so don’t ask,” promises this Berlin-dwelling San Franciscan near the top. Yep, that’s the Cali deadpan I know. I met Elissa Stolman in 2012, when she was an aspiring journalist and I a fledgling author hornswoggling her, briefly, into providing me free labor. It soon became apparent that the footnotes she was adding to her transcriptions were better than the interviews. She’s edited at Electronic Beats and contributes to Resident Advisor under her ID name, but she’s also become a serious spinner as Elissa Suckdog (touché). Her ear goes more for steel-springiness than champagne bubbliness, though there’s plenty of the latter by default. And I’d laugh out loud no matter which Cali drawl admitted near the end that it took all the will in the world not to pronounce it gah-raj rather than the UK-specific garridge.
