Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

King's X

1989
Atlantic

The second album from Midwestern Rush fanatics struggling with their spirituality (and, in the case of singer/bassist Doug Pinnick, his sexuality), this twisted take on Alice in Wonderland contains some of King’s X’s most introspective work (“Summerland”) and their biggest hairspray anthem (“Over My Head”). Pinnick’s soulful church-taught singing sets them apart from most other metal bands on its own, but together the trio achieves the seemingly impossible on this inquisitive opus: they make prog funky.
