In which DJ, producer and musician Steve Cobby once again demonstrates his impressive abilities to weave musical magic across so many genres, indeed often causally blending a few elements from several subgenres into a fresh new hybrid as though it were nothing, constantly breathing fresh life into the house, hip hop, funk, jazz and dub rhythms that are the backbone of his work. It’s difficult to pick outstanding tracks in an album so consistent, but opener Jenkem is the type of supa-tight, in the pocket, synth-funk head nodder that Cobby makes look deceptively easy, his dubby, spacey, FX-ridden Babylon On The Hudson skanks along superbly, while A Candle For The Moth assembles Rhodes, vibraphone and theremin atop a crisp R’n’B beat into a G-funk/sophisti-jazz cross-pollination. Another deeply satisfying Cobby album.
