If Words Were Flowers

The third solo album from American songwriter, musician and singer Curtis Harding sees him experiment with various versions of the classic soul template. The title track matches a Stax-style horn riff with stacked female vocals, ‘Hopeful’ is a bold, dramatic string-laden soul stalker, while ‘Can’t Hide It’ recalls fuzz-guitar-era late 60s Motown. There are occasional nods to electronic sounds via the spacey synth solo on ‘Explore’ and the T-Pain style vocal FX on ‘So Low’, but this is largely a retro-sounding affair, that happily puts a set of decent songs against a classic soul backdrop to great effect.
