Invocations / The Moth And The Flame

Released

Keith Jarrett has probably enjoyed the most freedom among ECM’s varied roster, and on Invocations, a curious 1981 release featuring the pianist also on pipe organ and soprano saxophone, we find it tested. The latter two instruments enact monologues and dialogues throughout Invocations, speaking a meditative language that recalls that of Arvo Pärt. The Moth and the Flame is its pianistic counterpart. Spanning five parts, its improvised hymns grow from well-tilled heartland, reaping a crop of savory flavors to explore.
