If someone was playing along to the Midnight Express soundtrack in 2013, it would sound like this. (I mention it too often, but it does seem like there’s a small cohort of musicians whose true life purpose was to be on the Drive soundtrack. I see you, Johnny Jewel.) This territory is bounded on one end by Daft Punk and on the other by Moroder, and everybody inside that area represents a different level of derivation. Outrun is synth rock as imagined by someone who had two albums—Midnight Express and Discovery. And—wait—one Tina Turner CD.
