Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)

Building on their steadily increasing profile in the 2020s, Yves Tumor delivered a set of killer songs on 2023’s Praise a Lord, often simultaneously aggressively unusual and engagingly catchy, nodding to the legacy of acts like Prince and Nine Inch Nails without simply trying to be them. Whether it’s the late 1990s electronic Smashing Pumpkins moves of “Meteora Blues,” the trippy soul/psych flow of “Heaven Surrounds Us Like a Hood,” or the quick breathy kick of “Echolalia,” there’s a real sense of rising to the occasion in the best, most creative sense.
