The term “power pop” had been coined nearly ten years earlier, but there’s an argument to be made that, by 1976, no one had done power pop better than the Dwight Twilley Band did it on their debut album. (Cheap Trick wouldn’t release their debut for another year.) The production may sound a little messy by 21st-century standards, but the songcraft is anything but: on “You Were So Warm” the guitar parts chime perfectly, the harmonies soar gently, and the hooks burrow into your ear at a rate of about three per minute. Even the retro 12/8 of “I’m Losing You” feels somehow new and innovative, in support of Twilley’s fragile lead vocal and the heartrending chord progression.
