Some years after Billy Mackenzie’s tragic suicide, original Associates bassist Michael Dempsey oversaw a welcome back to front overview of the band’s recorded legacy, expanding on the earlier Popera compilation and including the singles from the one solo album Mackenzie released during his lifetime. Besides the unimpeachable heights of songs like “Party Fears Two” and “White Car in Germany,” some of Mackenzie’s more notable obscurities take bows, including a cover of Simon Dupree’s “Kites” and the bubbly merriment of “Ice Cream Factory.”
