One of 2023’s most delightful efforts came from the combination of a 90s alt rock legacy and the longer one of a transmedia giant when Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo cowrote a slew of songs for a Broadway-style musical episode of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series; it could have been hopelessly insular but instead is loving and warmly witty. The highlights come from two cast members with previous musical theater experience: Christina Chong’s power ballad “How Would That Feel” and Celia Rose Gooding’s sad-into-triumphant “Keep Us Connected.”
