Sweet Jesus
Cobby put his acoustic guitar at the centre of 2019’s Sweet Jesus, the gentle strums and plucks of “As Good As Gold” a simultaneously stately and homely opener, before instantly switching it up into “Chauffeur De Camion,” a chrome-edged synth-funker that he then turns super-Balearic by adding more tasteful acoustic guitar to, which is followed by some lightly swinging alt-jazz-funk via “Samba School.” Then he turns a corner into the part-dub, part synth-wave “Lanspresado,” before “Feline Plastique,” another acoustic guitar-centred sample-jazz shuffler, before the sparse “Scattered to the Four Winds” which is made of bluesy fingerpicking with a delightfully dark and dirty synth bass wub wub… and on it goes, fresh take after fresh musical take, another great piece of work in Cobby’s discography.
