Max Romeo is known primarily for two things: a smarmy bit of slackness titled “Wet Dream,” and a magnificent roots-and-culture album he recorded at Lee Perry’s Black Ark studio called War ina Babylon. But there’s much more to his history, and a lot of it is gathered in this excellent two-disc compilation on the Trojan label. Despite the title, only about two-thirds of these songs are religious or cultural — there are lots of fine love songs here too, including a handful of slack titles. It’s the dire warnings to Babylon that make it worth the price, though.
