Hum

1995
RCA

Slowgazers hailing from the home of REO Speedwagon, Hum fell into that weird liminal space between alternative and space rock (see also: Failure). Their chronicles of suburban malaise lived in the dichotomy between quiet despair and undulating feedback. Minor hit “Stars” depicts a relationship as it drifts off into the ether, “I’d Like Your Hair Long” sets a breakup to a jaunty pop-grunge tune, and the guitar tone on “The Pod” birthed the Deftones. You get the sense that they could count stars all night and still wind up back at zero.
