The Smashing Pumpkins

1998
Virgin

To say that the Smashing Pumpkins were in a weird place following the success of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and the disastrous death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and the temporary expulsion of drummer Jimmy Chamberlain rather understates. But in making do with a more explicitly electronic turn on the follow-up album that resulted, Billy Corgan distilled those industrial and goth roots he had always admitted to into a series of strong songs. Check out “Shame” and “Behold! The Night Mare” in particular.
