Chunky Shrapnel
Less a traditionally structured live album and more a one-to-one soundtrack to the concert film of the same name, Chunky Shrapnel is a gelatinous blob of a record. Like its title implies, it combines bits and pieces of live shows from October 2019, held together by gluey, gooey instrumental passages that, in the film, underscore the monotony of finding parking, killing time in between shows, and doing last-minute drummer calisthenics. If any of this sounds like lesser Gizz to you, then you might miss out on some of the most electrifying live performances in this band’s history, culminating in 19 minute “A Brief History of Planet Earth,” an improvised raver that, in the film, ends up being literally handed over to members of the audience. It’s a celebration of the random and often dangerous magic that can sometimes occur without warning at live shows, and its capture is all the more compelling.
