Seadrum/House of Sun
Comprising two long tracks, Seadrum/House of Sun is surprisingly one of the more accessible entry points into the confounding and explosive discography of Boredoms. “Seadrum” begins with Billie Holiday-esque vocalizing and quickly starts its thunderous marathon of drums, piano, and wordless singing, some of which, as the title implies, was recorded by or inside the ocean. While the tempo is rapid, the effect is oddly hypnotizing and sometimes soothing, as if the proper midpoint between hardcore punk and Thelonious Monk-like piano jazz has been discovered. “House of Sun” meanwhile is all hypnotizing drone, sitars-a-plenty, violin and noodly guitars. Complementing the manic “Seadrum” it gives the feeling of peeling back the curtains and taking a big bracing look at the sky first thing in the morning.
