Everything Is Slow
Bright & Findlay are Tom Findlay from Groove Armada and electronic producer/songwriter James Alexander Bright, and Everything Is Slow is their debut album release of hazy slo-mo, 80s-flavoured soulful synthtronica. Their songs are constructed of dance floor-savvy 80s-ish elements — Moog sounding basslines, Roland synth swells, Yamaha DX7 digital keys, crisp, functional drum machine beats — to which they add stacked, effected vocals, singing light, wispy melodies. It all adds up to a kind of dreamy Balearic update of US 80s soul à la Cameo or Jam and Lewis. They stick to a pretty limited sound palette, particularly the beats, which in dance music tend to be the parts most slaved over and fetishised, whereas here they are purely functional, providing a slick, tight steady pulse, which makes for a really coherent sounding album. Deliberately laid back with a hint of blissed-out detachment, Everything Is Slow delivers sunny synth-soul and dreamy digital-funk.
