Having become the global force she wanted to be, Shakira jogged left and revealed that who she wanted to be was really Kate Bush, but with more dancing. That’s wrong, though, at the level of sound. Who she sounds most like here is a serious Nineties songwriter like Lloyd Cole or maybe a version of Indigo Girls, which is one reason Anglophone audiences struggle. Once the big dance hit is out of the picture, Shakira is more like an enthused Chris Isaak, and sometimes The B-52s.
