Filigree and Shadow

This Mortal Coil’s second album was at once more expansive, originally released as a double-vinyl effort, and more focused, with producers Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer joined on a number of tracks by Simon Raymonde from the Cocteau Twins and, on various vocals, Dominic Appleton from Breathless, Alison Limerick and the sisters Deidre and Louise Rutowski. Another blending serene, melancholic textures with originals and unusual, striking covers — the rework of Colin Newman’s “Alone” is a standout — makes Filigree and Shadow a success.
