White Zombie went through a long creative journey from grimy noise-rock to meticulously collaged industrial metal, and when frontman Rob Zombie put the band on hiatus in 1997, he continued to evolve. His solo debut, which went triple platinum and spawned two hit singles, “Dragula” and “Living Dead Girl,” kept the grinding guitars of White Zombie’s final incarnation (drummer John Tempesta stuck around) but added thumping 4/4 beats better suited to dance clubs. After a brief intro track, the album comes charging out of the gate — “Superbeast,” “Dragula,” and “Living Dead Girl” blend industrial and metal with fist-pumping choruses designed to be roared at top volume, and as the album progresses, “Demonoid Phenomenon” and “Meet the Creeper” keep the energy level high. There are a few side trips into psychedelia (“Spookshow Baby”) and what can only be described as haunted house trip-hop (“The Ballad of Resurrection Joe and Rosa Whore”), but ultimately this is a fairly consistent package that laid the foundation for Zombie’s solo career.
