It’s absolutely one of the most vivid record titles around, but 2023’s I Killed Your Dog, the third album by the remarkably talented L’Rain, is described by the artist herself, Taja Cheek, as an ‘anti-break-up’ record, bound up with the idea of the inevitable damage you can cause those one loves. Mixing short interludes with a new series of easy fusions of everything from blazing electric guitar to fluid electronics and effects to deep jazz-touched r’n’b, her beautiful singing voice always paramount, it’s an evolving, engaging listen resisting any easy summarization.
