While most of Keith Jarrett’s classical repertoire goes Baroque, in the mid-1990s, he made two massive recordings of Mozart for ECM, of which this was the first. Fronting the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davies, he navigates the 23rd, 27th, and 21st piano concertos, playing off decorous wind writing, luxurious cadenzas, and kaleidoscopic color schemes with a light yet confident touch. Even airier turns of phrase like No. 27’s Larghetto or No. 21’s Andante feel heavy yet comfortable, like a custom-tailored winter coat. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Masonic Funeral Music round out the program.
