Shafts of Sunlight

Shafts of Sunlight continued Fofana’s 2022 trilogy by slightly inverting the approach of Ballad Air & Fire: here a shorter track begins the album before a much longer one completes it. With thematic goals building on an interrogation of Western music theory subsuming wider study in the field, the opening title track begins as a crumbling field recording but with a midsong arrangement that brings that title concept to bear. In contrast “Ode to Impurity” embraces a mix of recurrence and disruption to similar elements, new forms resulting from the experiments.
