Song for Everyone

Released

Song For Everyone is the follow-up to the 1983 recording session, Vision, which expanded the Indian violinist’s reach through the contributions of saxophonist Jan Garbarek and trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg. Here, the latter is swapped out for Zakir Hussain on tabla and fellow percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Where this album’s predecessor found rhythm sporadically, here it is organically present. Shankar even uses a drum machine (“Paper Nut”) to tasteful effect, thus highlighting the drive that brings these musicians together in harmony. Again, Shankar’s pizzicato lines dazzle (“I Know”), offering full support for Garbarek’s adaptive flights of fancy. A very special outing.
