Quite why Motown chose not to release David Ruffin’s ‘David’ album in 1971 is unclear, but it wasn’t because of lack of quality. Re-released as ‘The Unreleased Album’, it’s packed with vibrant, euphoric soul-funk jams and emotive downtempo ballads featuring superb performances from one of the most distinctive voices in soul music. Motown house band the Funk Brothers deliver that wonderful turn-of-the-decade Motown sound where they introduced fuzz and wah wah guitars and substantially upped the funk quotient. File under lost classic.
