Despite often being threatened by censorship and complete bans, mahraganat has become the sound of modern Egypt. Mahraganat emerged in the early 2000s with the blend of traditional shaabi and electronic music, grime, and rap, and flourished during the revolution as a way for a whole generation to voice their discontent. Shobra el General has been making music for years, but he’s become one of the biggest voices in a new wave of mahraganat, taking the sound in more experimental directions. This 2019 EP, whose title translates as “My idea is in the drum”, showcased not only his production style, but also his unique songwriting, which blends slang with classical and contemporary arabic poetry.
