Lodger

David Bowie

1979
RCA Victor

The last of what would be termed the Berlin albums, reflecting not only a conclusion of living and recording there but regular collaborative work with Brian Eno in particular, Lodger sometimes seems like it’s in the shadow of its two immediate predecessors. But its variety makes it another key listen, Bowie stretching his vocal abilities in new ways on songs like “African Night Flight” and “Yassassin” while serving up another clutch of standards in the surging “Boys Keep Swinging,” the snarky kick of “DJ” and the dramatic “Look Back in Anger.”
