New Moon
Almunia are an Italo psychedelic disco project and New Moon is their 2011 debut album on the eclectic but always high-quality Claremont 56 label, the perfect home for their lengthy languid dub disco, spaced-out Balearic and psychedelic soft-rock/smooth-funk blends. Sticking to low tempos, soft moods, and placid arrangements that float by like the gentlest summer breeze, multi-instrumentalist Leonardo Ceccanti’s layers of heavily reverbed guitar form the centrepiece of a series of unhurried disco of various flavours: “Kissing Time” is a quietly confident acoustic guitar yacht rocker, the brooding “Travel” matches its crisp chugging 4/4 beat with a very-80s synth bass, while album finisher “Until She Comes” is a smooth and blissfully genre-fluid combo of folkish picked acoustic guitars and AOR drum and bass. Nostalgic yet fresh, head-nodding yet soothing, New Moon exists somewhere between the dance floor, the beach and the sofa, sometimes all three at the same time, and there’s an engaging warmth within its languorous grooves.
