Between Girlschool, Rock Goddess, and LA-based Bitch, the most notable female-driven metal bands of the early 80s took a lot of cues from the testosterone-fueled Motorhead, busting through the doors of the Boys Only club in the most undeniable way possible. Whip-wielding Betsy Bitch notably took Rob Halford’s BDSM chic from subtext to sub text. Sadomasochistic slammers like “Be My Slave” and “Heavy Metal Breakdown” show that they were the first band signed to Metal Blade for reasons besides their outrageous stage show – although that certainly didn’t hurt, and hurt good.
