Giger: Schattenwelt

Released

Schattenwelt is Swiss violinist and composer Paul Giger’s third ECM album. Inspired by the Greek myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth, he traverses seven scenes, starting in the cosmos and ending in the underworld. “Bay” and “Bombay (Good Night)” respectively open and close the program with whispering energy, encompassing such penetrating evocations as “Crane” and “Birth Of The Bull.” Surrounding them are dances, cries, and other cracks in the fourth wall, each a sentient force vying for escape. With astonishing virtuosity, matched only by the humility of it all, Giger turns every statue into flesh.
