Astro-Creep: 2000 (Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head)

Released

Four dirtballs from the New York art rock scene, White Zombie somehow pivoted from their unlistenable early experimental records to cranking out gargantuan groove metal riffs with this, their spooky swansong. Often tossed in the industrial metal dungeon, their usage of layered horror movie samples feels more beholden to the 80s hip-hop that rose through the sewer with them. Rob Zombie hadn’t yet become self-parody or a film director yet, so all of his visual artistry gets channeled into creating a weird sonic world. Their second major-label album doesn’t contain nearly as much filler as the first. Sure, there are still some unlistenable experiments on here. The demonic disco of “More Human Than Human” more than makes up for them.
