Oscar Coyoli had already demonstrated his unique approach to folk-inspired music that straddled the line between cacophony and consonance with the debut album of his namesake project; for his second album, the music’s scope became grander in order to match the emotions within. Horns, accordions, tape noise, and other unorthodox elements place Coyoli in league with Elephant 6 projects like Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control, yet it follows its own path. With the free jazz fire flirtations of the title track, the oceanic drones of “Valenta,” and the doomy passages in “Rena”, Bemót is a remarkable album of intimacy and rage.
